Government Housing Turns Into Hazard as Concrete Canopies Collapse at Greater Noida Janata Flats, Residents Fear Major Tragedy

More than 400 families living in the 16-year-old Janata Flats in Greater Noida's Sector MU-1 fear for their safety after repeated collapses of concrete canopies during the monsoon. Residents blame poor construction quality and alleged neglect by the Greater Noida Authority, warning of protests if urgent structural repairs are not carried out.

Residents of the Janata Flats in Sector MU-1 of Greater Noida are living under the constant threat of falling concrete as the 16-year-old government residential complex continues to deteriorate, raising serious concerns over the safety of more than 400 families. The situation has become particularly alarming during the monsoon season, with peeling plaster and repeated collapses of concrete canopies transforming the housing complex into a potential disaster zone.

The latest incident occurred on Thursday during rainfall when a large section of a concrete canopy suddenly collapsed, crashing onto a parked car and motorcycle. Both vehicles sustained extensive damage, further intensifying fears among residents about the structural stability of the buildings.

Resident Sharma, whose vehicles were damaged in the incident, said the concrete canopy collapsed without warning and completely destroyed his motorcycle and car. He said residents now live in constant fear, worrying every day that another section of the building could fall on their families.

According to residents, such incidents have become increasingly frequent, particularly during the rainy season, as the aging structures continue to weaken.

Residents' Welfare Association official Gopal Pathak said the condition of the buildings deteriorates further during the monsoon, with multiple concrete canopies collapsing in recent weeks. He said the repeated incidents have created deep concern among residents, especially for the safety of women and children.

A woman resident, who requested anonymity, recalled a similar incident that occurred a few days earlier. She said a portion of a concrete canopy fell onto her house and damaged the protective metal roof she had installed outside her home. She added that her children were standing nearby when the debris fell and suffered injuries, leaving the family living in constant fear.

Residents have blamed poor construction quality and the alleged failure of the Greater Noida Authority to maintain the residential complex for the worsening condition of the buildings. Many families have installed protective metal roofs outside their homes in an attempt to shield themselves and their vehicles from falling debris.

Expressing frustration over what residents described as prolonged official inaction, Residents' Welfare Association official Kuldeep Tiwari said repeated complaints submitted to the Greater Noida Authority had produced no response. He stated that more than 10 to 12 concrete canopies had already collapsed across the complex and warned that if immediate action was not taken, all residents would unite to stage a protest outside the authority's office.

The Janata Flats were allotted by the Greater Noida Authority in 2010 as 30-square-metre residential units. Residents said many families invested their lifetime savings to purchase the homes and never imagined that the buildings would deteriorate so rapidly within just 16 years.

With no repair work underway, anxiety continues to grow among families, particularly those with children and elderly members, who fear that another structural collapse could result in serious injuries or an even greater tragedy.
